MPs are being told to vote on Theresa May’s Brexit deal this week to avoid a no-deal Brexit, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said on Tuesday.
The Prime Minister’s spokesman told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that the vote would be called on Thursday.
“We are in a situation where there isn’t enough time to bring forward a general election,” he said.
“This means we have to act now. We need a vote on the deal and we need to ensure that we have the time and the stability to get that through.”
Talks between May and European Union leaders broke down last week, causing the PM to tell MPs on Monday she had failed to get a new deal to get EU approval and that the UK would be leaving the bloc with or without a deal.
The European Commission has now made clear that they will not countenance a no-deal scenario, EU sources said, meaning that the UK can technically stop no deal being put into law by sitting it out.
May has therefore moved to bring forward a vote on the deal to next week, in a bid to get it over the line.

Mr Corbyn said it was a matter of duty for MPs to vote on the deal, despite the risk of no-deal being enacted, calling on the Government to clarify their position on Brexit.
He added that he was “not confident” that MPs will support the deal, and said that it was important for Parliament to take a view on the deal before a general election.
“Our concern is that we have got a situation where we are heading for a no-deal Brexit and the only people that know about that are people in the Government,” he said.
